DESS post Bad or DESS key no longer has correct code?

Is the D.E.S.S. post bad or the DESS key if upon insertion of the key gives one long beep then 4 short beeps? I would think if the key or post were bad there would be no chirps at all. Having a "sun burned" cluster screen I can't read the P codes or other troubleshooting info. 2007 RXT
